In the works for over a year, my one man show at the University of Mississippi Museum officially opened this past March 18thMy marketing director, Julia, and I flew to Oxford two weeks prior to assist with the installation of my sculpture, furniture and paintings. With the valuable help of museum staffers, Marti and Robert, the install was a breezeThe opening reception and lecture took place the week of March 24th. Susie and I drove down that Monday from Kansas City. Tuesday night the Museum hosted the opening receptionThe evening’s festivities were attended by over 200 people. Included were a large contingent of my daughter Ali’s Tri Delt sisters. They took special notice of my paintings of Ali much to her embarrassmentDuring the week, I had the opportunity to sit in on two University painting classes. In the first, I talked primarily about the business of art since many in the class would soon be graduating and beginning their art careersIn the second class, I joined the students in painting individual self portraits. I had never painted from a mirror, so my anxiety level was considerable. In the end, we all had a great time and posed with our completed worksMy last scheduled activity for the week was my Artist’s Lecture at the Museum Thursday night. The mix of students and art aficionados allowed me to broach a wide range of subjects as well as follow up questionsThe exhibition continues through August 9, 2014.
